Every farm family has a great, simple cake recipe they can whip up whenever company drops by. This exceptional one comes from the Bomgardner family, one of our Pete and Gerry’s farm families. Intensely chocolatey, with creamy-rich peanut butter frosting, it’s going to become your go-to cake, too!

For the cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 3 large Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 2 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening (such as Crisco or Earth Balance Buttery Sticks), room temperature
  • 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4-5 tablespoons milk, as needed


To prepare the cake:

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease and flour a 9-by 13-inch baking pan.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3

In a large bowl, beat together the milk, coffee, eggs, oil, and vanilla. Add the dry ingredients and mix well for 3 minutes.

Step 4

Pour into the pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 40-45 minutes. Cool completely on a rack before frosting.

To prepare the frosting:

Step 1

Beat together the sugar, shortening, peanut butter, and vanilla until smooth, adding just enough milk to make the mixture spreadable. Slather on the cake and enjoy!
