To make the cake

Preheat oven to 350F.

In a saucepan, combine butter and brown sugar. Heat on medium low until melted.

Remove pan from heat and add in 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt, stirring to combine.

Pour melted butter and brown sugar mixture into a 9" x 13" baking dish, then layer apple slices on top.

Prepare cake batter by combining cake mix, the remaining teaspoon of cinnamon, nutmeg, eggs, vegetable oil, and milk, or use your favorite standard cake recipe to create a batter from scratch with the additional cinnamon and nutmeg.

Pour cake batter into pan over the apples. Transfer to oven and bake for about 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
