What makes a Pete and Gerry's Organic Egg organic?
Our hens eat organic grain beginning in the second day of life. We do not give our hens antibiotics or medications. No pesticides or herbicides are used in the production of the grain that they eat. They live in spacious wide-open barns where they can choose where they will lay their eggs and also where they want to be. When conditions are appropriate our hens are also given access to the outdoors.
Our Organic hens
We raise our hens in cage free barns right here in Monroe, New Hampshire. Our hens begin life as perpetually chirping, curious little fuzz-balls, endlessly speeding around the barn. Within a day of being hatched, they fearlessly explore every corner they can find. If the chicks are not in a group chattering with one another like kindergartners at recess, they have somewhere to go. When one makes a dash, without fail, several more chicks follow behind in an orderly line.
Within a few weeks, little feathers start to replace their fuzzy down ensembles, and they will begin what we like to call the "the teenage weeks." When they begin laying eggs, we move them into our spacious cage free laying barns where they proudly lay eggs for Pete and Gerry's. Our hens are similar to a Rhode Island Red hen.
What do we feed our hens?
All of the organic grain we feed our hens comes from Les Morrison's Feed Mill, just across the Connecticut River in Barnet, Vermont. The feed given to our hens is composed of organic corn, organic soybean, organic linseed, and organic flaxseed. The grain that we get from Les Morrison is free of pesticides and herbicides.
The whole Morrison family is involved in the mill, and in fact, Les' oldest son Earl is in feed mill school learning to someday take his father's place running the mill. We know Les and his family take as much pride in the grain they mill for our hens as we take in the eggs our hens lay. When it comes to producing better tasting organic eggs, our relationship with the Morrison family has made all the difference.
What is Omega-3?
Our hens are fed certified organic flaxseed, which contains high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids. The Omega-3 in the hen's diet is passed on to their egg. Our eggs contain approximately 200mg of Omega-3 per egg. Two of our eggs contain approximately the same level of Omega-3 found in 1.5 ounces of fish.
Omega-3 fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fats, one of four basic types of at that the body derives from food. All polyunsaturated fats, including the Omega-3s, are increasingly recognized as important to human health. Some of the health benefits of including more omega-3 in your diet are that a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and even ease arthritis pain.

Our Barns
Our hens are housed in state of the art cage-free barns. Our hens have free run of the barns and also have ample roosting and scratch space available. When conditions are suitable the hens have access to the outdoors. Our hens lay their eggs in nests that resemble small houses with red curtains to give them privacy for laying.
Certified Humane
Pete and Gerry's Organic Eggs is a member of humane farm animal care a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the welfare of animals. To get more information about this organization go to Humane Farm Animal Care.
Why do we use plastic egg cartons?
Our egg cartons are made entirely of recycled soda bottle plastic. By buying our eggs, you are helping create a demand for recycled plastic. The cartons are made from 100% recycled PETE plastic. If you recycle our container along with your plastic soda bottles, you will be doing your part to help our environment.
Chicken Chat
Our girls spend an absurd amount of time singing and chatting.
Each day begins with a stretch, a wing flap, (and for some an
attempted flight.) The remainder of the day consists of gab, chat,
gossip, singing, and blather. If they are not eating, drinking, or
egg-laying, they are singing. The amount of chicken chat in our
barns is downright ridiculous. We have no idea what they are
trying to tell one another, and we are even less certain they are
actually listening to each other, but we do know that they are
thoroughly enjoying themselves.
