Have you ever seen some of the more unusual breeds of chickens roaming around with uniquely colored feathers and sometimes even with slate blue legs? These distinctive breeds of chickens are heritage breeds and are known for laying exceptional colored eggs and have valuable genetic diversity.  Pete & Gerry’s now has flocks of Ameraucana hens which originated in Chile and also French Marans hens. The Ameraucana hens lay beautiful pastel bluish-green eggs and the Marans hens lay dark chocolate brown shelled eggs.

Put all your heirloom eggs in one basket.

Not only will you marvel at the beauty of the eggshells but the the eggs also contain gorgeous golden yellow yolks. Lynn from the blog “Celebrate Green!” says,

“The gorgeous yolks looked like sunshine in the bowl and even after whisking them with the whites, then cooking and putting on the plate, their bright yellow glow made me smile.”
